Assessment of Fish Collision on Current Turbines

Client:

Topic:

Assessment of fish impact in a current turbine using high-fidelity CFD.

Date:

April 2022

Summary:

In order to better understand the impact of Sustainable Marine’s current turbine on fish, high-fidelity CFD simulations with a one-way coupling Particle Lagrangian Tracker (PLT) were used. The PLT was adapted to better model the fish, such as the inclusion of thrust capabilities. Several studies were conducted by releasing those particles in various conditions, calculating their impact rate, and correlating it with fish mortality metrics existent in the literature.

Result:

Fish collision metrics were obtained, for several conditions, after running high-fidelity CFD simulations of Sustainable Marine’s current turbine combined with the new, improved, fish PLT.
