Shallow Water Resistance of an Electric Ferry
Total resistance of an electric ferry vessel in shallow waters.
This project goal was to estimate the shallow water total resistance of a ferry vessel for several different speeds, displacements, and water depths to properly dimension the propulsion system while considering the impact of roughness, trim and sinkage, appendages, and air resistance. The results were compared against Holtrop & Mennen’s empirical method and friction resistance against the Katsui friction line.
The total resistance of the vessel was calculated for different velocities, draughts, and water depths. Results were shown to match well with Holtrop method. Friction resistance was shown to match well with the modern Katsui friction line.
