POLISHED – Pollution, atmOspheric boundary Layers, Interaction and SHip Emission Data

Funded by:

Topic:

Emission and dispersion study of atmospheric pollutants from harbored ships in city ports.

Summary:

This project proposal aims at improving Industry 4.0 methods and models applied to ship design, as well as obtaining knowledge and understanding of the influence of different neutral ABL winds on the near-field and far-field process of exhaust gas dispersion of vessels under ship-ship and ship-harbour operational conditions.

The result of this research project contributes to improve Industry 4.0 design mechanisms used for the assessment of impacts and risks of exhaust gas dispersion from ships operating in open seas, ports, proximity of urban environments and relevant industrial infrastructure. Furthermore, the development and use of accurate Industry 4.0 methods and models for ship design allow European industries to develop vessels that comply and operate under stringent environmental legislation helping the EU to attain its Sustainable Development goals while remaining economically competitive.

The result of this research project will generate knowledge and Industry 4.0 models and methods that will be used to correctly predict ship performance and environmental footprint.
Moreover, this research project can contribute to devise strategies for vessel’s O&M that reduce noxious exhaust gas emissions to crew, cargo, harbour and urban environments, i.e. hot-ironing vs cold-ironing, hybrid systems and use of alternative fuels.
